In another fine example of Republican hatemongering, Senator Kit Bond from Missouri warned Palin's rally crowd about judges who have empathy "for the teenage mom, the minority, the gay, the disabled."
Because we all know, we shouldn't have that in this country.
The article from cbsnews
He said:
"Just this past week, we saw what Barack Obama said about judges," Bond said. "He said, ‘I’m tired of these judges who want to follow what the Founding Fathers said and the Constitution. I want judges who have a heart, have an empathy for the teenage mom, the minority, the gay, the disabled. We want them to show empathy. We want them to show compassion.’"
Followed by:
"He thinks this country should be a government—not a government of laws, but a government of compassion and empathy, not of laws," Bond said.
Unfortunately, Senator Bond isn't up for re-election this November, nevertheless, we should let him know how we feel about such comments. How dare those groups want... compassion and empathy of all things?
Jeez!
Let him know what you think!
Edit: For the record, this is the Obama quote made on July 17, 2007
"We need somebody who's got the heart, the empathy, to recognize what it's like to be a young teenage mom. The empathy to understand what it's like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old. And that's the criteria by which I'm going to be selecting my judges."
As elchip noted, Senator Kit Bond voted against the anti-torture bill saying:
"There are different ways of doing it. It's like swimming, freestyle, backstroke," in response to the question "do you think that waterboarding... constitutes torture?" He followed up by saying "There are some who say that, in extreme circumstances, if there is threat of an imminent major attack on the United States, it might be used, but I certainly would not favor it in any circumstance."
He is up for re-election in 2010, so lets keep a future eye on this race to keep people like him away from our government!
